Whose Job Is It? Handoffs That Hold Between Staff and the Dentists

Saturday, March 20, 2027 11:00 am – 12:30 pm

Speaker

Dr. Jan Jaffer

A graduate of the University of the Pacific (UOP) in San Francisco, Dr. Jan Jaffer earned his dental degree in 2002 at the age of 22.

Soon after, Jan joined his father's practice, where he spearheaded the transition to a fully digital and paperless environment in 2003. This foundation of integrity, hard work, and a commitment to his patients, staff, and community fueled the development of the TREC Dental Partnership, which now operates 17 dental clinics across the Calgary area.

Dr. Jaffer is recognized as an early adopter of innovation in dentistry. He was the first Canadian dentist to import the Sirona Teneo treatment center and the Galileos (3D CBCT). Furthering his commitment to technology, he also established a digital dental laboratory, and all TREC clinics are equipped with digital scanners and AI x-ray interpretation capabilities.

A dedicated philanthropist, Jan regularly volunteers with Kindness in Action and Dentistry For All. He has participated in 17 overseas dental missions, providing care in countries including Guatemala, Peru, Tibet, Morocco, and Ecuador.

Session Details

Most dental teams work hard at communicating and still lose things in the gaps: the schedule change that never reaches the operatory, the insurance question sitting with the wrong person, the owner’s decision the front desk hears about last. Effort is rarely the problem. Usually nobody was named to own the next step. Dr. Jan Jaffer grew up in a practice his parents ran as dentist and office manager and now leads TREC Dental’s group of Calgary clinics. He’ll walk through how information moves between owners, office managers, admin and clinical staff, and share practical routines that keep a handoff from depending on who’s working that day.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
  • Map the information that moves between owners, office managers, admin and clinical staff, and name who needs it to act.
  • Hand off in three parts: what to communicate, which channel it belongs in, and who confirms the next step.
  • Set simple daily routines for sharing schedule changes, patient needs and operational decisions, so the team stays aligned when shifts change.
  • Frame owner and office manager conversations around patient care rather than production numbers.
  • Ask four questions before adding any new software or AI tool, starting with who owns the work it creates.
